I posted this question along with a couple others previously but I thought we might get better response under a different subject line. Also I have not seen any discussion anywhere on this topic so I might be good to hear from a variety of sources. My question is: How do I approch my dealer when it comes to negotiating a price? I know that the first prices I have been quoted have some fudge room built into them. But I am not sure how to approch this with the dealer. Unlike a car I will be very, very dependant on this particular dealer for service for the next decade. I want to be sure that I start this relationship on a positive note. Of course I do not want to spend any more than I have to. Also I have seen some prices quoted on the web where it seems like the delivery charge will be more than offset by the savings on the sales tax. But can I expect the same support from my local dealer if I did not buy the tractor from him to begin with? Also if we all did this we would not have any local dealers. Just a thought. I appreciate any and all discusion on this critical topic which we have all been through.

Rick,You should go to more than one dealer and get prices. Also you can go on this page and get a price check and check for price checks previous posted! Most dealers will work on your tractor but they will generaly put their customers first. What I have seen is there is a difference in prices around the county, but there is something said about service and most people I know will pay a little extra for good service before and after the sale! Good Luck! ....

You put your finger on it when you said "If we all did this there wouldn't be any local dealers". My own Kubota dealer has offered to pick up and deliver free whenever I need service. You can't get service like that through the web. Sure, I probably could have paid a thousand dollars or so less, but this way there was no buying/shipping hassle whatsoever and I've got a trusting relationship with a good dealer/service service shop. Looked at over the 20+ years I intend to keep this tractor, that $1000 doesn't seem so big at all. ....

Rick,To give you some idea, I just bought a new NH 3010S last week, the list price was 18K, cash price was 14.5K and the dealer cost was suppose to be 13K (this from Ritchie Tractor CO. www.tractors4u.com) After the smoke had cleared my bottom line was 11.4K from my dealer, and he was happy to sell me the tractor, I don't think our relationship was run down by the negotiation or price he sold the tractor to me for. I'm sure he still made money or else he wouldn't have sold me the tractor. I'm sure that the support well be there should I ever need it. ....

If it is still there over on Machinery Forum, there is an exhaustive discussion about this dating back a month or so. You ought to try to check it out. ....

I work in parts at a JD dealership, and it is a pleasure to hear positive comments regarding local dealers. However, at our dealership, we promote service for what we sell and dont sell. Our feelings get alittle hurt, but we get alot of those people back because of our "World Class" service. It's good to see you choose a Deere. You chose the machine with best product support in the industry! ....

Depending on dealer, buying from the local makes a world of difference. Picture it, Saturday morning, flat tire, Sunday family bar-b-cue, 5 acres(two weeks unmowed) how much is your 3,000 lb machine worth? Price DOES make a difference but does the dealer know your name? Will they make time? For warranties on machines we sell we drop everything(almost always) and work to get you on the road. Just saying that a good relationship on a 20,000 dollar machine is more important than the 8 hours and $100 spent on gas to pit one dealer against the other. Have faith that your average dealer barely makes a $1,000 against a $15,000 sale. After 5 years my FIRST bid is LOW bid, if you ask for bottom dollar, and act like you'll take it, tell the dealer you've looked around I promise you WILL get what you want. We feed our families on what we sell do I want to lose the sale on the one chance I get? In today's market, one chance is all we get. Do your homework, what you know will protect you. Collect literature, compare all apples to apples(this is important) and be prepared to buy. Decide on the money you can spend, divide it by 30 years, THEN select model, test drive(very important), don't ask for $20,000 machine if you can only afford $15,000. Finally, ask for what you want and stick to it. GOOD LUCK!!I'm interested in all replies. Jay Sales Manager ....

The deciding factor in my buying a Kubota was my previous dealings with the John Deere dealer. Prices were comparable but the JD dealer is dishonest an a**hole. P.S. the Kubota B2400 is a dream machine and I get the free pick up and delivery for all repairs and service. ....
